Students and Teachers at Moonah Arts Centre
Moonah Arts Centre offers curriculum-linked excursions and incursions for schools, designed to give students hands-on experience with contemporary art practice outside the classroom. Our programs are developed in consultation with practicing artists and mapped to the Australian Curriculum, making it easy to build a visit into your term planning.
Whether you’re bringing a class in for a half-day excursion or booking an artist to visit your school, we tailor each session to suit the age group and learning focus of your students.
School Excursions
Gallery Explorers (Years 3–6)
A guided tour of current exhibitions paired with a hands-on art-making activity inspired by the works on display. Students engage directly with practicing artists and learn how to “read” contemporary art through discussion and observation.
Half-day | Max 30 students per session
Art & Design Studio Visit (Years 7–10)
A more in-depth studio session exploring a specific medium — printmaking, ceramics, or digital design — with students producing a finished piece to take back to school. Ideal for supporting Visual Arts or Design and Technology units.
Full day | Max 25 students per session
Contemporary Practice Workshop (Years 11–12)
Designed to support senior Art and Visual Communication Design students, this workshop pairs a curator-led exhibition walkthrough with a critical discussion session, helping students develop analytical and reflective skills for folio and exam work.
Half-day | Max 20 students per session
In-School Incursions
Can’t make it to the centre? We also offer incursions, bringing an artist and workshop materials directly to your school. Popular options include:
- Printmaking on the Go — a portable relief printmaking session (Years 4–8)
- Sculpture Sampler — an introduction to 3D form using low-cost, reusable materials (Years 3–6)
- Design Thinking Challenge — a collaborative design-and-build activity linked to STEM/STEAM units (Years 7–9)

We know excursions need to fit into a busy term calendar, so we’ve tried to make the process as simple as possible.
- Curriculum links are provided for every program, so you can slot a visit straight into your planning documents.
- Risk assessments and site information are available on request ahead of your visit.
- Flexible group sizes — we can often split larger cohorts across multiple concurrent sessions.
We’re also happy to discuss custom programs for specific units of work, incursions tied to a particular exhibition, or professional development sessions for staff interested in embedding art practice into other subject areas.
